Well, hi there and welcome back to the blog. Hope you’re out there living your best lives and of course, thrifting? 🙂 For those new to thrifting, you might be wondering, hmm, when would be the best time to go raiding a thrift store? Thankfully, Ms. Thriftrayder is here to guide you like a fairy godmother.
So, to answer you question, I’d have to ask a question of you. What is your goal heading into the thrift store? What do I mean by goal? Well, what I’m looking to find is, are you looking to find the best deals in the store or are you looking to score first dibs on the most unique items at the store? Once you’ve decided on this, you are half way there.
My response to the question, “When is the best time to go thrifting?”
Now, to answer the question. If you’re looking to get first pick of the items at the thrift store. I’d say, go early in the week, and when I say early, I mean, Monday and Tuesday. The stores will be putting out all those items that got donated over the weekend, when people are finally free to drop off their donations which will then be sorted and put out early in the week. This would be an ideal time to shop for the most unique finds as you’d have less competition(a lot of people will be at work) and first pick on those thrift store goodies. This gives you a better shot at scoring the most unique and sought after items, wouldn’t you say?
Is your goal to spend less?
Now, if your goal is to score the best deals and the most affordable items at the store, then you’d have to do a little work before you visit the store you have in mind. See, in the past, most thrift stores had 50% off on Wednesday. Though some thrift store still stick to this schedule. Alot of thrift stores prefer Fridays or even Sundays for this. So, you’d need to either call ahead of visiting the store to see when they have their 50% off sale or chance it for your first visit but remember find out before you leave for future reference.
Another thing to keep in mind is, most thrift stores give you a daily chance to score even more discounts with their colors of the day. If you’ve ever been to a thrift store, you’ll notice that they write their prices on brightly colored strips of cardboard-like paper. On each thrift day, they have discounts on those tag colors that typically range from 35-75% off the tag price. So, if you can do a walk in or even call ahead to find out the colors of the day and stick to only those, you’d score some pretty good discounts off their already affordable prices.
Keep this in mind
Last point would be that, for most every thrift store, they offer 50% off EVERYTHING in the store (yeah, even furniture!) on black Friday. I honestly don’t go to regular, retail stores on black Friday as I don’t see much of a discount compared to their regular prices, but that’s just my opinion, by the way. If you have been thrifting for a while, you’d know that a lot of thrift stores are notorious for not giving discounts on furniture. This rule literally seems to go right out the window on black Friday as the thrift gods seem to shine on us lowly ‘thrifters’ on this fine day. If you’re in the market for some affordable, well made furniture with a bit of history and character, you wouldn’t want to miss the black Friday furniture sales, fact!
Well, thanks for sticking it out to the end of this post. I hope you picked up some valuable tips on thrifting and are now well equipped to go-a-raiding? As always, I had a ton of fun putting together this post and hope it was as entertaining as it was helpful :). I’ll see you on my next one. Good bye now!
